Combining a background in Marketing with studies in Social Science and Psychology to be a UX/UI Designer

About me

When I reached 40 (I mean, who’s counting…) years of age I decided I needed a career change. A lifetime in Marketing had left me unfulfilled. I wanted more creativity, more excitement, more challenges. But how could I combine my studies of Social Science and Psychology with my experience in Marketing? Enter UX/UI design! Studying UX/UI design gave me the energy I have been searching for for years.

In Marketing, I had access to marketing conception, project management, data analysis and strategy development, but I was bored! UX/UI design allows me to combine these skills with my studies, particularly in research, interviewing and data analysis. In addition, all of these hard skills can be combined with my soft skills of listening, empathizing, collaboration and communication. In UX/UI design, I enjoy nothing more than listening and understanding the user interaction/user interface issues of companies. Then, by applying the concept of ‘design thinking’, I am able to alleviate these issues and provide solutions that are beneficial to both the company and the users.

How many UX/UI designers does it take to change a lightbulb? I don’t know the answer to that either! But I enjoy exploring, pondering, wondering about such questions and more. Curious and creative I’ve been called, and I don’t disagree.
